Sleep Aid 101

You roll over and look at the clock that reads a cold and cruel 3:00 A.M. You laid down five hours ago and after the first hour of counting three thousand and eleven sheep you are left feeling frustrated and confused.

The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke informs us of many harmful effects not sleeping well has on our health.  Impaired memory and task performance, excessive cortisol levels, reduced growth hormone and testosterone output, mood swings, hallucinations, increased fat mass, decreased muscle mass and a weakened immune system can all be a result of improper sleep.  Sleeping well means sleeping for 7 – 8 hours a night for most adults and is a necessity of healthful living. Creating a new sleeping schedule can be one way of guiding your brain into dreamland.

Start your sleeping schedule by waking up with the sunrise! Raising your body up with the sun is a great way to reset your natural circadian rhythms, which tells your brain when to be energized and when to relax.  Make it a point to remove alcohol, tobacco and caffeine from your diet to reduce excessive brain activity. Read your labels and remove high fructose corn syrup and processed sugars from your diet, as they can induce sleep disturbances by making your brain crave sugar.  Eat your last meal one hour before bed.  Write down what time you plan on going to sleep and visualize yourself waking up feeling refreshed.  At the end of the day, to really knock yourself out the natural way there is an emergency supplement procedure you can initiate that just may work.

Take the following supplements at least 40 minutes after your last meal and 30 minutes before you plan on falling asleep …

  • 10mg Melatonin – Melatonin is a naturally occurring sleep hormone that is produced by your body and has been shown to help improve sleep.
  • 1000mg GABA – GABA is a neurotransmitter in the brain that helps to reduce anxiety and physiological activity in the muscles.
  • 200mg 5-HTP – 5-HTP is an amino acid that helps to increase serotonin levels.
  • 200mg Sam-E – Sam-E is a compound that reduces inflammation in the joints as well as improves mood
  • 400mg L-Theanine – L-Theanine is an amino acid that reduces mental and physical stress.
  • 200mcg Chromium  - Chromium is a mineral that helps to keep blood sugar levels stable
  • 500mg Kava Kava – Kava Kava is an herb that promotes muscular relaxation and reduces mental anxiety

After taking this wonderful concoction of natural sleeping pills, soak your body in a comfortably hot bath with 2 cups of epsom salts and 10 - 20 drops of organic lavender essential oil. This will purify your skin and help relax your muscles. Massage your feet and lightly stretch your body, letting your muscles relax even more. You just might drift right off to lala land right there in your bathtub, or at least find yourself half asleep stumbling to get in bed.
