The Ornish Diet is a vegetarian diet that follows a strict program that only allows fewer than 10% of calories consumed to come from fat. The diet emphasizes eating beans, fruits, whole grains and vegetables. Dairy products (nonfat), as well as certain commercially available products, are permitted in moderation. The “very low-fat or nonfat” commercial products allowed in the diet include whole grain breakfast cereals, nonfat mayonnaise and salad dressing, oatmeal, fat-free crackers, and certain soups.
Dr. Ornish cautions dieters to avoid products that are high in sugar, meats (all types, chicken and fish included), oils of all kinds, avocados, olives, nuts and seeds, and high fat or “low-fat” dairy. Dr. Ornish also encourages dieters to try yoga stretching, breathing, and meditation. From what we could gather, the only costs involved would be the money dieters spend on the foods they eat, the cost of Dr. Ornish’s book (if dieters choose to purchase this) and if there is any sort of fee associated with belonging to the support groups.

The program focuses more on unblocking coronary arteries than on weight loss—this is not a program for individuals who are looking for an efficient and fast weight loss solution. While we value Dr. Ornish’s insights and diet, we are concerned about the current absence of his website and his lack of inclusiveness—the diet has so many requirements that it is nearly impossible for most people, let alone everyone, to follow. There are more comfortable diet plan options that offer better weight loss results.

You should also exercise each day by doing an activity that is fun and enjoyable. Water is extremely important too, and dieters need a lot of it to stay hydrated and to keep their bodies free of toxins.
