Olean
If there is any food that makes it on most dieters’ “banned list” it might be potato chips. These high-carb, high-fat culprits are seen as both addictive and counterproductive to lowering one’s caloric intake. However, in 1998, Proctor and Gamble unveiled a variety of chips that was seen by many as the answer to dieters’ “chip paradox.” These chips contained Olean. How this “miracle” additive might actually play a role in dieters’ weight loss efforts will be discussed further in the following review. |

Olean is P&G’s brand-name for the substance olestra. Olestra is a fat substitute which tastes and feels like fat in the mouth but functions quite differently in the digestive tract. Because of its compound formation, olestra cannot be absorbed by the intestines. This causes it to pass right through to the excretory system. Although people consuming olestra-fried chips or other products may be happy to have less fat entering their bodies they may not be happy to have the loose stools and increased fecal output caused by olestra. At first, there was even a concern that olestra was also flushing important fat-soluble vitamins through the body. Newer Olean products contain modified nutrients to counteract this effect. While snacks that contain olestra add less fat to the diet they are still a source of calories and should not be considered a justification for eating copious amounts of the “fats, oils, and sweets” portion of one’s diet.

 | Conclusion |
|
Olean may help chip-lovers consume a moderate amount of their favorite snacks without adding as many fat-calories to their diets. However, Olean-based products should not be seen as the save-all for dieters or even for their nutrition plan. Dieters must find well-rounded eating programs that address caloric intake, nutrient consumption, and so on. It’s also important to exercise more and drink more water to stay hydrated and free from toxins. Lastly, dieters who are looking to eat healthier amounts and burn more fat may want to consider a dietary supplement which safely and effectively suppresses the appetite and increases the metabolism. Using such a product under a physician’s care while following the guidelines stated above may provide the right balance needed to make weight loss a reality…with or without potato chips!
