Inside the Brookhaven Obesity Clinic
The medium of television has proved to be an extremely powerful tool of communication and influence. From fictional shows to news programs to advertising, television shapes much of popular culture. So how is that rectangular screen in every living room shaping the weight loss culture? That is precisely the issue addressed in this review of the reality-TV show Inside the Brookhaven Obesity Clinic.

Inside the Brookhaven Obesity Clinic (IBOC) once aired on the Discovery Channel-owned network TLC (The Learning Channel). It has since been cancelled and lives on only in the memories of watchers and critics. This show documented the goings-on of what is formally known as the Brookhaven Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Queens, NY. While many viewers cite a candid look at the struggles of the severely obese a number of people feel that this program may simply revealed the shortcomings of a society unprepared for helping these patients. With patients being discouraged about the foods they are being served and then “cheating” (ordering out for food) and some making little to no progress after years of treatment, it’s hard to find the redeeming qualities of this show.

Realizing how difficult life could be if you don’t start to lose weight now could certainly become motivation for taking action. In this sense, people who struggle with a bit of excess weight might find Inside the Brookhaven Obesity Clinic to be a stark reminder of how bad things could get if they do not change their habits. However, watching a television show is not going to directly affect anybody’s weight loss efforts in a positive manner. Dieters would do better to get off the couch and find some exercise activities they enjoy. Healthy eating is also essential to weight loss as is drinking lots of water (to stay hydrated and free from toxins). Lastly, an effective weight loss supplement may make these regimens most fruitful. Supplements must increase fat burning potential while suppressing the appetite in order to truly provide the user with assistance. Always check with your doctor before beginning any program or using any pill. Wellness is within your reach and losing weight is the first step.
