Summary |
Herbplus, by Douglas Laboratories®, is described rather scantily on the Douglas Laboratories® website as a “weight management” product. A downloadable fact sheet offers a bit more information, however. Herbplus is intended to support proper bowel function through laxative assistance. It is not clear how Douglas Laboratories® intends for this laxative-based formula to contribute to weight management. In fact, the use of laxatives is often associated with superficial weight management techniques. That said, let’s look at the Herbplus formula to see what consumers can expect from the ingredients.

Herbplus contains Magnesium, Fig Concentrate, Aloe, Cascara Sagrada, Senna Leaves, Licorice, Senna Pods, Black Currant, Anise, Basil Flowers, Basil Leaves, Uva Ursi, Marjoram Leaves, and Dandelion. We’ll note the following ingredients:
Magnesium is an abundant chemical element that is essential to biological systems. It is found in green vegetables, nuts, and whole grains. Aloe Vera, aside from its soothing properties in wound treatment, may promote general intestinal, digestive, and colon health. Cascara Sagrada is a common herbal laxative. It is recommended that Cascara Sagrada not be taken for more than one to two weeks.
Senna, like Aloe and rhubarb, contains anthraquinone derivatives and glucosides called sennosides. These act on the lower bowel and are highly effective laxatives that work, in part, by increasing peristalsis in the colon. Licorice Root has been used in herbal medicine for stomach ulcers, sore throat, and bronchitis, and it serves a soothing function.
Uva Ursi has been used for medicinal purposes as an antimicrobial and a diuretic. Dandelion Root is rich in vitamins A, B complex, C, and D, as well as iron, potassium, and zinc. It is used as an appetite stimulant and digestive aid. Dandelion leaves are used as a diuretic.

Herbplus seems to be suited to its stated purpose. Its contribution to healthy weight management might be limited, but as a way to cleanse the bowel and promote regularity, it could be a great benefit. We recommend taking it with caution, however, as prolonged laxative consumption can be disruptive to wellness. It is important to maintain a healthy level of nutrients in the body; extended laxative use may lead to dehydration and a lack of such nutrients.
